Preservation of the crestal bone and soft tissue is paramount to the long term maintenance of dental implant function and esthetics. Multiple treatment protocols are available to the practitioner to assist him in making a rational decision. The main focus in implant dentistry has been on the hardware such as implant connections, implant surface, platform switching, and more recently on instrumentation and partial extraction therapy. The purpose of this presentation is to discuss new strategies in merging concept of biology (preservation of buccal plate and increasing vascularization) and the concept of biomechanics (platforms, surfaces and instrumentation).
